Jack Stantons bungee solution
I bought a box of bungee cords from WalMart for less than $5.00. I took two of the 36 inch bungees and used them to hold up my cowlings.
They work great! They have plastic coated hooks on the end so no scratched paint, and the hooks hook under the pins on the cowling fasteners so they don't come loose.
